A cross-disciplinary view on phytoplankton blooms and their role in the climate system

Phytoplankton are photosynthetic organisms that inhibit the upper, well lit, layer of the World Ocean. While accounting for less than 1% of the global biomass, phytoplankton are responsible for approximately half of the global primary production, making them key actors in the global carbon cycle. Phytoplankton also have important impact on the formation of primary and secondary marine aerosols, thus significantly influencing the properties of the marine boundary layer aerosol population.

Since aerosols and CO2 are two of the most important regulators of Earth radiation budget, correct representation of phytoplankton contributions is essential for accurate modeling of the climate system. Such representation requires quantitative understanding on various physical-biogeochemical interactions at the interface between the ocean and the atmosphere. In this talk I will present a cross-disciplinary effort aimed at studying the ensemble of phytoplankton-climate interactions, by combining  satellite remote sensing and in-situ data. The approach taken, which is based on detailed pinpointed observations of oceanic and atmospheric variables and newly developed remote sensing techniques, will be discussed, while showing examples from different parts of the world ocean.
