Dame Shirley Porter

Founding Donor

The Porter School of Environmental Studies (PSES) was founded thanks to the commitment and support of Dame Shirley Porter. Dame Shirley, a former Lord Mayor of Westminster in London and Leader of the Westminster City Council, has long chosen to highlight the importance of environmental issues through her work. It has been her vision to create a school that will advance the status of environmental studies in Israeli academia and contribute to developing environmental solutions both nationally and internationally. She remains actively involved in the school's projects and activities, as well as supporting a variety of other environmental causes in Israel through the Porter Foundation.

Dame Shirley has been a governor and committed supporter of Tel Aviv University for many years. Together with her husband, Sir Leslie Porter, who passed away in March 2005, she has been responsible for the establishment of several schools and buildings on campus. She is now supporting the construction of the 'Green Building' that will house PSES, for which plans are currently being developed.

On April 23rd 2009, PSES founder, Dame Shirley Porter, was awarded a "Green Globe" for her significant contribution to the environmental movement in Israel. The annual Green Globe event, now in its sixth year, is organised by the Life & Environment umbrella organization of environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Israel. more...
